"The best constituency man, anywhere, anytime", is how Ernie Eves described Stan Darling. Stan Darling left his mark on parliament when at the age of 61 he won the election to represet Parry Sound-Muskoka on Parliament Hill. While he was in Ottawa he made his voice heard on acid rain and in 1991 the Acid Rain Treaty was signed by the then PM Brian Mulroney.
Stan was involved in municipal politics as a councilor and reeve for 30 years and federal politics as a Member of Parliament with the Progressive Conservative Party for 21 years. Aside from politics, Stan won a Canadian Service Award in 2000 for his work on the environment and a Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002.
Stan also headed the Georgian Bay development council and was a member of the Burke's Fall Lion's Club for 60 years with perfect attendance during this time. Stan Darling will be remembered for his hard work, dedication, and his service for the environment.
"This scholarship fund will help students with an interest in the environment attend post-secondary level Environmental Studies programs," said Keith Montgomery,Chair. "Stan Darling was a leading force in the fight to protect Canada's Environment during his more than 60 years in service to his community and his country and this scholarship is just one way for us to carry on his legacy."
"I was pleased to be able to help establish the Stan Darling Environmental Scholarship Fund this year," said Tony Clement, MP for Parry Sound Muskoka, President of the Treasury Board of Canada and Minister for FedNor. "Stan Darling's true legacy is in how he inspires us to show the same commitment and to dedicate ourselves, not just in his memory, but also to the future and what we can achieve."
Stan Darling served as a Councillor for four years, and then as Reeve for the next twenty-six. He then went on to serve as Member of Parliament for Parry Sound - Muskoka for a further twenty-one years, proudly representing his constituents in Ottawa. Working with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Stan was instrumental in establishing the Acid Rain Treaty with the United States. Though a great achievement, the treaty was just one example of his strong commitment to the environment. Stan Darling was presented with a Canadian Distinguished Service Award in the House of Commons in 2000 and received the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002.
